Tell us a little bit about yourself - where you were born, where you grew up, career, hobbies, interests, etc.
I grew up in Fulton and after marrying my husband, Jim, moved to Oswego over 40 years ago. We have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren (plus one on the way!). At Excellus Health Plan, I was a Project Manager before retiring a few years ago. I love going on vacation to warm weather areas during the winter, and golfing.
What brought you to the Bikram Yoga practice? Where did you first learn about Bikram Yoga?
A few of my friends introduced me to Bikram a number of years ago when it was at the Kingsford house, but my work schedule didn’t coincide with the yoga schedule. After I retired, I was able to practice Bikram yoga again!
How often do you practice?
Between attending classes and doing the poses at home, I practice about 4 times a week.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking your first class? What changes have you seen/felt in your body- overall physical and general well-being?
I have several health issues; Fibromyalgia being one of those issues. Every doctor repeated the same thing - get and keep moving or you’re going to be in even more pain. Just moving was so painful and the last thing I wanted to do was to exercise. I fearfully went back to Bikram yoga, because I thought the heat would help me move a little better. Well, that fear turned into eagerness to attend the next class. After each class I realized that I could move more and for longer periods with less pain, plus the depression lifted. I’ve never been known for my coordination and flexibility, so I continue to surprise myself when I can go deep into and hold the poses. At first I couldn’t do most of the poses and had to rest often, but with each class I gained more strength and flexibility.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
Bikram yoga helped to give me back and keep mobility.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
After several years of the healing effects of Bikram yoga, I’ve once again been able to add walking to my exercise routine! I can enjoy and do more activities with my husband, children and grandchildren, which is priceless!!
What is your favorite part of Blossom Yoga Oswego?
The heat is one of my favorite parts of Blossom Yoga because I couldn’t have made it this far without it. I learn something new from each of the different instructors. The instructors emphasize that each person is at a different level and each yogi must focus on themselves, which helps me to focus on me and not think about competition or others judging me.
I would love to see more morning Bikram classes, but understand that we need more yogis to attend to make it worth the instructor’s time.
